Screening OP 4.0 1 states the need for environmental screening. Projects are characterized according to three categories. Environmental Impact Assessment Guideline Series 1 (2003). Projects are screened, project types and the level of environmental impacts assessment are defined in both the Ethiopian and the World Bank systems.

Environmental and Social safeguard document requirements • ESIA with ESMP report is required for Category A projects • A full Environmental impact assessment is required for Schedule 1 projects. Reports, based on the types of the projects, are required in both systems.
• ESIA with ESMP, but not as detailed as for Category A, is required for Category B projects • A preliminary (not as detailed as for Schedule 1 projects) environmental impact assessment report is required for Schedule 2 projects.
• No document is required for Category C projects.
• No document is required for Schedule 3 projects beyond a screening.
